Chigorin Defense Guide
The Chigorin Defense is a chess opening for black that starts with the moves 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6. It is an unusual way to play with black against the Queen’s Gambit. It is technically part of the Queen’s Gambit Declined, although the gambit is accepted later in some variations. The Chigorin Defense is one of the few queen pawn openings to place the queen knight in front of the c pawn. The biggest advantage of the Chigorin is probably its surprise factor, since it is significantly less played than the other options black has.
Main Ideas in the Chigorin Defense
In the Chigorin Defense, black exerts a lot of pressure on the center, while focusing on rapid development of their pieces, usually with bishops that quickly pin the knights on f3 and/or c3, and a queen with many available options.
Black tries to strike at the center early and continues pushing from there.
In some variations, black exchanges their bishops for knights, which allows white to play with the bishop pair.
